Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is it safe for me to use Books for Bucks?

Unlike most all commercial and retail websites, Books for Bucks does not utilize tracing cookies, and, therefore, leaves no trail on your computer.

As part of good computer safety hygiene, we recommend clearing your computer of all cookies on a frequent basis. If you are running IE 6 or 7, just right mouse click on the IE icon and choose Properties. Then click on Browsing History, Delete, Delete cookies.

Because we do not use cookies, each time you utilize Books for Bucks you must enter your Submission information, since we do not store it for future reference. You may, if you choose, supply us with your e-mail address, but we will never forward that to any other party. Your e-mail address will only be utilized for confirmation of your submission, or if there is a need to clarify an order, so that we can ensure crediting your eligible purchase to your designated organization.

2. Where does the money that ends up being donated to my charity or organization come from?

Many on-line retailers pay referral fees for on-line shopping business that is sent to their site from a third party site, such as Books for Bucks. Those fees vary from retailer to retailer Once an “eligible purchase” has been made, the retailer credits the account of the third party. The amount credited, that is the portion of the total purchase price that is eligible for the referral fee, does not include shipping, handling or insurance. Only the actual cost of the goods purchased is eligible for a referral fee. That process typically takes 6-8 weeks. There is no charge to the consumer for using the Books for Bucks website to access their favorite retailer’s website and make their purchases.

Once we receive the credit from the retailer it goes into a pool for each designated charity. Once each pool reaches $25, a check is sent to the organization. Special Fund raising pools will be distributed on a monthly rolling basis, whether or not the pool reaches $25.

Books for Bucks does not promote individuals to purchase beyond their means, nor to specifically make purchases in order to donate a portion to charity. If you wish to support an organization, the most effective and efficient manner is through your direct support of that organization.

However, for everyday and routine purchases that you would have ordinarily made through a retailer’s website, you can effortlessly direct a portion of that purchase to your favorite charity by utilizing the Books for Bucks portal.

3. My average purchase is for a relatively small amount. How does my purchase make a difference?

Most people do not make large purchases, and, therefore generate relatively little in referral fees. However, when a community of individuals participates, those small referral fees really do add up, and they can add up quickly.

That is why a campaign to raise funds for a designated organization can be very effective. Harnessing an organization’s members to designate that organization to be the recipient of shopping related referral fees can be a very effective method of fund raising.

4. What is an eligible purchase?

In order for a purchase to be considered as “eligible”, you must first access your retailer by clicking on one of the BooksforBucks.com banner or text links. These will take you to your retailer’s website where you can then proceed with your shopping. If you go directly to your retailer’s website, without using the BooksforBucks.com shopping portal, no credit will be given for your purchase.

Additionally, Each retailer may have their own definition of what constitutes an eligible purchase. The costs of shipping, handling and insurance are not included. Further, any returns of merchandise, refused credit card charges or claims are debited against the referral fees. Additionally, some merchants may have a time limitation on how long an individual may generate referral credits. This is particularly true if your browser is set to accept cookies. Periodically deleting your cookies, as outlined in FAQ #1, may extend your eligibility period for those retailers that have limits, and is part of a good computer safety hygiene program.

5. How does Shop for Society determine how much to donate?

Once the retailer has received payment for the cost of goods shipped, they send a report to Shop for Society. Since we do not ask for any identifying information from you, in fact, even the request for your  E-mail is optional, we can only reconcile the retailer report if you provide us with the retailer’s name and the precise amount of the cost of goods. Those are the 2 items that we match up with the retailer’s report

We then credit the designated charity’s Shop for Society account.

In the case of “shopping search”, or eligible purchases made at any of our sites that do not have donation forms, advertisers may pay a referral fee for clicks onto their sites. Any search related referral fees or fees related to eligible purchases through sites without donation designation forms are distributed to the five most actively designated charities within the past calendar quarter, on a prorated basis, rather than to a specifically designated charity or organization.

The same methodology is used for any retail purchase submissions that do not name a specific organization or charity for the bequest

6. How much money is donated to the charity that I have designated?

Each retailer has a referral fee schedule. It is based on a percentage of the “eligible purchase”. Occassionally, a specific retailer may have incentive programs based upon volume of purchase, in which case the percentage is increased, and the amount going to your designated organization is, therefore, increased. Additionally, some retailers have special bonus programs for new customers who sign up for their service. Occassionally, these sign up bonuses may be considerable and your designated charity receives further benefit.

The following list details the percentage referral fees for your eligible purchases: The retailer may change the referral fee or cancel the affiliate program at their discretion
